IBPS Clerk 2020 Exam Details: Syllabus and Book List

About Exam:

Institute of Banking Personnel Selection(IBPS) Clerk is the exam conducted for the recruitment of LDC/UDC for official work of Banking Sector. IBPS shortlists deserving candidates for the post of clerk for various nationalized banks listed under it. IBPS started holding CWE to recruit IBPS clerk for various banks. The registration is done online. Prelims exam also conducted online.


1.     Nationality / Citizenship: A candidate must be either –

a)     a Citizen of India or

b)     a subject of Nepal or

c)      a subject of Bhutan or

d)     a Tibetan Refugee who came over to India before 1st January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India or

e)     a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania (formerly Tanganyika and Zanzibar), Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India

2.     Age:

Minimum: 20 years Maximum: 30 years

Age Relaxation

·       Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe                                                      5 years

·       Other Backward Classes (Non-Creamy Layer)                                                3 years

·       Persons With Benchmark Disabilities as defined under                                 10 years

·       Ex-Servicemen, Commissioned Officers                                                          5 years

·       Persons affected by 1984 riots                                                                       5 years

·       Regarding UT Jammu and Kashmir                                                      declare later


3.     Educational Qualifications:

Ø  A Degree (Graduation) in any discipline from a University recognised by the Govt. Of India or any equivalent qualification recognized as such by the Central Government.

Ø  The candidate must possess valid Mark-sheet / Degree Certificate that he/ she is a graduate on the day he / she registers and indicate the percentage of marks obtained in Graduation while registering online.


Exam is conducted in three Stage which are Preliminary Examination, Mains Examination and Interview

Preliminary Examination: Online MCQs

Total 100 marks for  100 questions. 0.25 marks deducted for every wrong answer.

·       There will be 30 questions from English language which contain 30 marks. These questions has to be completed in 20 minutes.

·        There will be 35 questions from Quantitative Aptitude which contain 35 marks. Time allotted for this section is 20 minutes. (Hindi/English)

·        There will be 35 questions from Reasoning Ability which contain 35 marks. Time allotted for this section is 20 minutes. (Hindi/English)

Main Examination

Total 200 marks for 190 questions.  0.25 marks deducted for every wrong answer.

·       There will be 50 questions from Reasoning & Computer Aptitude which contain 60 marks. Time allotted for this section is 45 minutes. (Hindi/English)

·       There will be 50 questions from General/financial Awareness which contain 50 marks. Time allotted for this section is 35 minutes. (Hindi/English)

·       There will be 40 questions from English Language which contain 40 marks. Time allotted for this section is 35 minutes. (Hindi/English).

·       There will be 50 questions from Quantitative Aptitude which contain 50 marks. Time allotted for this section is 45 minutes. (Hindi/English).


NOTE- Marks obtained in the online main examination only will be considered for shortlisting for interview and also for final merit listing.




Quantitative Aptitude: Ratio and proportion, Averages, Time and work, Speed, Distance and time, Mixture and allegation Stocks and shares, Percentages, Partnership, Clocks, Volume and surface Area, Bar & Graphs, Line charts, Tables Height and Distances, Logarithms, Permutation and combinations, Simple and compound interest, Equations, Probability, Trigonometry, Profit, Loss and Discount, Mensuration, Elements of Algebra, Data Interpretation, Pie charts.


Reasoning Ability:

Verbal Reasoning-  Analogy, Classification, Word formation, Statement and conclusions Syllogism, Statement and assumptions, Statement and arguments, Coding Decoding, Blood Relations, Passage and conclusions, Alphabet test, Series Test, Number, Ranking and time sequence, Direction sense Test, Decision making test, Figure series, Input/output, Assertion and reasoning, Sitting Arrangement

Non-Verbal Reasoning- Series test, Odd figure Out, Analogy, Miscellaneous Test.


Computer Knowledge: Basics of Hardware and software, Windows operating system basics, Internet terms and services, Basic Functionalities of MS-Office( MS-word, MS-Excel, MS-PowerPoint) History of computers, Networking and communication, Database basics, Basics of Hacking, Security Tools and Viruses


General Awareness: Current affairs related to national and international issues of last 6 months, Overview of Indian Financial System, History of Indian banking system, Recent credit and monetary policies introduction to National financial institutions like RBI, SEBI, IRDA, FSDC etc and of International organizations like IMF, World Bank, ADB, UN etc, Abbreviations and Economic terminologies, Banking Terms, Important Government Schemes on capital & money market.


English Language:  Reading Comprehension, Cloze Test, Para jumbles, Tenses Rules, Multiple Meaning /Error Spotting, Fill in the blanks, Paragraph Completion, Vocabulary ,Verbal Ability and Idioms & Phrases
